Our take
The least intimidating mechanism of the ROKR range: desk-sized, glue-free, and the payoff is audible — wind the base spring and the keys rise and fall through Canon Variations on their own. Fine as a gift or a first gear train. Harder to recommend if you need legible labels: The Gadgeteer's reviewer found the engraved letters nearly invisible on the dark-stained sheets. ROKR quotes four and a half hours; that builder needed over seven.

What works
- Genuinely self-playing: wind the spring in the base and the keys rise and fall on their own while it plays Canon Variations - no manual pressing
- Transparent acrylic cover keeps the gear train and movement visible once it is on a shelf, so the mechanism is the display, not just the shell
- The Gadgeteer's hands-on reviewer praised the documentation specifically: every piece labelled and organised by letter and number on its sheet, plus exploded diagrams and a fastener legend
- Smallest and least intimidating build of these seven at 223 pieces and 140x170x125 mm - fits on a desk and does not demand a dedicated workspace
- Design extras that are actually visible in the finished piece: book-shaped base, retro candlestick, music rack
What to watch for
- Engraved part letters and numbers did not take well on the dark-stained sheets and were hard to read, per The Gadgeteer's reviewer - a real problem in a kit that depends on labelled parts
- The clear acrylic top arrived cracked for that reviewer (ROKR replaced it quickly and without argument, but it is a known fragile part)
- Distorted or off-sounding music generally means a slight misalignment in the gear train, so sloppy assembly is immediately audible rather than merely cosmetic
